Yesterday I picked up a few rolls of old film I had developed (with the 1st roll from Paris!) & while I haven’t been able to scan them, I also had some old family slides and negatives printed at the same time, so they gave those to me digitally. I had 8 x 12 prints made – they’re so rich, so stunning. It really made me question my switch to digital!
My grandfather with his pet parrot. My nana made him get rid of it, which is totally upsetting, though my mama remembers it as a little girl. Apparently they pair bond with their keepers, so it must have been hard on the poor parrot.
My nana! Both of these photos would have been taken in the early 1940s. Amazing, right?! Go Kodachrome.
My little brother and I in the 1970s!! This one is from an old slide, I love it so much, I’m going to frame it and hang it immediately!!
& this one I’ll frame and send to him. Nice bib.
I also had 3 shots of my Nana & Poppops wedding in NYC in the 1940s turned into 5×7 prints. I love the gestures, the clothes, and the perch of the hats in this one.
When my grandmother passed away, we spent a lot of time going through old photos. My grandfather just wanted them out of the house and shoved boxes at his three children. I still wonder what treasures my aunt and uncle hold. These are pieces of history that tell family stories, even if I wasn’t there to experience it. Old photos give me shivers. This was a real find. Thank you for sharing.
Those color photos from the 40s are TDF. It seems like there’s been a wash of vintage color photos going around the interweb lately. There’s something almost shocking about seeing color photos from an era that we think of as black and white.
Holy crap, the color photos are blowing my mind! It’s crazy seeing such old photos in such bright colors.
Especially compared to the crappy 70s slides! When I have some extra cash I want to get more of his slides (he was a photographer who worked on 5th Ave) printed out.
At first, I couldn’t figure out how you got such great color from colorizing the old photos. Those look amazing!
I just love old family photos. Several years ago, my mom and I sorted through boxes and boxes of old photos and scoured frame shops and craft stores for inexpensive frames. I have them all over our house in various places, but I really need to get them scanned before they start to disintegrate.
the one of your grandfather with his parrot is unreal. like something out of a film!
I had some of those Overstreet pix printed. Now that we’re moving (hopefully, soon…) I want to get them framed and up! I love love the ease of doing prints from flickr etc. So amazing!
And I love those color prints! So brilliant, they really make them seem like they were taken yesterday.
the parrot!!
Wow those are wonderful pictures. Overall, I am not very thrilled with digital photos. They are quick, easy, instant-gratification but there is also something flat about them too.
I have a collection of photos of family and friends from using Polaroid cameras, or rolls of film, even some from early cameras and I think the quality is wonderful. I agree that the colors are so much more rich and saturated!
I almost couldnt believe the depth of the film shots I had printed – it’s so different!! I wonder why!
Wow!
That shot of your grandmother in the garden is incredible. What a stunner!
Also the one of you and your brother totally just gave me a shot of homesickness with an added ovary punch to the face. Damn kids being all adorable and stuff. Your little green jacket! His bib! I can’t take it!
Awesome, awesome treasures. You’re so lucky to have these.
These are beautiful! So many people have already gushed over them, but I thought I’d add my awe to the groups. I love love love old photos, especially when they’re of your own family, there’s something so special about looking at them, your own personal history. So strange to think that there are whole different parts of our familie’s lives that we didn’t have a part of, especially when we can’t imagine our life without parents/grandparents if you get what I mean.
Photography kind of bridges the gap. Recently my Gran and Great Uncle went through some old family photos with me and my cousins – it’s so great to hear the stories and see their faces when they stumble across unexpected photos and forgotten faces
The colours in these are incredible! I love that photo of you and your brother, such great faces. I’m so excited to dig up this kind of thing when I move home!
There’s something that strikes me about all old wedding photos: all of them look so dated because of the fashions but all of them look classic. No matter what you wear, something about the fact that it is a wedding makes it look timeless.
Wow, that’s amazing. Wish people still dressed like that, especially the guys. It’s kind of sad that cargo shorts + t-shirt is the uniform for guys now. I wish they still wore suits and hats!
wish people still dressed up for every day. hey, bri and i are doing our part.
I like the wedding car, its classic.. lovely photos, thanks for sharing it.
