is it well with thee? is it well with the child? and she answered, it is well.
Today was spent in part wandering this very old (for America, of course) graveyard, with graves going back to the 1700s. I was thrifting in a town near where the wedding I’m helping with is happening, so I stopped in the graveyard while waiting to meet up with my brother and his wife at the wedding site. It was so peaceful and quiet, a fine drizzling mist – and then some kids nearby started playing terrible music. So I put on my headphones with Akron/Family and had a totally psychedelic graveyard experience, with many fine conversations with the inhabitants.
That first photo is of the grave of a mother who died in childbirth with her baby. It is heart-stopping.
While I’ve spent my entire life wandering graveyards, the pointing up finger never stood out to me until I got the reproduction the other day. There were so many in this graveyard. Our Annie! So sweet.
Urns and pentagrams.
I laughed outloud at this one, and then apologized to poor Jeremiah. It’s not his fault he di^ed.
I can feel the soil falling over my head…
Oh my, these are fantastic. Old graveyards are one of my favorites, I remember the ones in Vermont being especially spectacular. Thank you for posting these.
(poisonpen from LJ here) – I’m slowly catching up on all my regular site reads and finally got to Verhext today. These pics of the gravestones caught my melancholy fancy. So lovely! It makes me want to go to one – especially the old, downtrodden ones.
I like being on top of all things modern and current but I have such a constant ache when I realize how slowly (or quickly in some cases) the ancient remnants of history are being bulldozed away or left to crumble through neglect.
At least there are pictures, right?
Oh how I hate falling behind on my favorite blogs! Especially when I miss gems like this.
The oldest cemetery in Grass Valley is just around the corner and goes back to the 1850s. Mostly Irish immigrants who came for gold and the Catholic nuns who set up a convent and orphanage here. Lots of babies and young mamas.
I’ve always wandered in graveyards and much prefer taking Mycie there than to playgrounds with crazy kids and scary parenting!
Your photography lately is phenomenal.
