On our way home from Maine we stopped at the Mount Washington Hotel for dinner & some lazy veranda sun sitting. Built in 1903, it was a total throwback / time travel experience – a grand old hotel in the middle of absolutely nowhere. When I go to hotels I mostly just like to be in the hotel. Is that weird? Lazy mornings, room service, spa times – combine that with horseback riding, year round ice skating, and hiking trails? Sign me up. Now where IS that winning lottery ticket?
If you ever make it to Virginia, you should stay at the Homestead (http://www.thehomestead.com/) – definitely a hotel where you can just stay in the hotel. I’m looking forward to going back!
I do want to go to Virginia! I have family that settled in Bloxom (it’s on a wee island off the coast) in 1650 so I totally want to go dig through records. & speaking of estates, this one in Asheville is calling my name too: http://www.biltmore.com/
Old hotels are just the best. I love the national parks lodges of the west. Forrest and I were going to book ourselves a room at Old Faithful Lodge to stay on the way home from the wedding…unfortunately, it was booked solid so we’re out of luck. (And worse, I’ve lost my perfect opportunity to splurge on a hotel and have to convince Forrest to do it another time.)
Give me your old lady vacation any day. You do it right.
How is NOBODY ELSE on the porch GAAAAAAAH.
I adore the photograph of the gate leading into the garden. I want to do that in my own when I get the chance!
