surrender to messiness

You all gave excellent hair advice, I’ve been trying products and some have worked (Bumble and Bumble Curl Conscious Conditioner), and some haven’t worked for me (Bumble and Bumble Mousse). There’s more on the list to try but I need to use some things up before I do.

As my hair grows longer, I’m allowing the frizz to exist a little more peacefully. Maybe. It still won’t work for super professional situations, but I’ve been just messily tying it up and it works. As much as “messy hair” has been a  trend, it’s not the same AT ALL when you don’t have a choice and just feel disheveled – I’m coming to terms with my external appearance mirroring the sheer chaos of my brain, ha.

  1. Hurrah for finally letting go! I always find myself drawn to people whose hair is a little frazzley and wild (like my own). Maybe I have the reverse-prejudice that they’ll be less full of affectations than other folks on the street? I dunno.

    Love Carol Kane, too.

  2. You know, it’s always a grass-is-always-greener situation. I would pay good money for messy, curly hair instead of my straight hair that completely defies styling.

For what it’s worth, I thought your hair pulled up was very pretty and not at all unkempt.

  3. I do believe I have hair similar to yours. I went with a headband for awhile when it was too short to be pulled back, but too long to control. I just let it be (with a little bit of mousse).

  4. I suppose we’re all convinced that we got the short end of the stick and everyone else’s lot is better, but I’m one of those lank, thin-haired ladies who look upon curly heads and sigh in wistful jealousy. My hair is so thin, I can’t do much of anything with it, and it looks greasy so quickly. I wish for hair like Carol Kane’s! (♡ her)

  5. Hooray! I’m glad at least the conditioner is working. Sephora now carries b & b products, and I have a 15% off coupon right now, in case you need a huge one in the house- it’s NEVER on sale anywhere. sephora coupon code chic. yay!! (also, if you need anything else in the make-me-pretty department)

      1. You know, this is random and I’m a random commenter too (although I love your blog), but: I have fine wavy/curly hair that I don’t like to do much to but that I do like to have look professional, although it looks best in a layered (curly) cut. My best approach has been to encourage the frizzies to join the curls, so it looks curly, but smooth. I do it by curling little groups of hairs around my fingers when it’s wet. I mean, I grab half-inch or quarter-inch bunches and twirl them around and around. I sometimes help it by spraying with a mix of leave-in conditioner and water – very light, but provides a little smoothness. The keys seem to be going with the curly and doing it when it’s pretty damp, so the ends haven’t really dried yet. Then it stays smooth, whether I put it up or not.

        1. I do this! A little too much, hi neurotic hair twirling. My next step is actually to try a shower filter, because it’s either age changing my hair, or the water in my new-ish (just over a year) house.

  6. In totally get Carol Kane hair, sometimes. (Now I need to check out that movie!) I call it the fairy hair. What I wouldn’t give for just one day with a sleek, thick ponytail or chignon. I’ve started using sulfate free shampoo and conditioner that seems to tame the frizzies, but it’s also loosened the curl.

  7. I also have the messy, curly hair and it is hard to make it behave professionally! I always opt for pinning it up and hoping that it (mostly) stays in place. On non-work ays I kind of love the crazy. I like how you put it: it reflects the sheer chaos of the brain. I just discovered your blog and am a new follower. Happy to have found you!
